Free AI visibility checker for Shopify stores: how to check yours

Short answer

You can check your store's AI visibility for free in three ways. Ask a few AI assistants the questions your shoppers ask, and note which stores they name. Read the AI reports Shopify and Google already give you. Then run a checker on your product data, since that is what AI shopping channels read.

Key takeaways

  • Treat every checker score as a sample. No tool sees exactly what a signed-in shopper sees, and Google says no outside tool sees its ranking systems.
  • Shopify's Agentic page shows sales and sessions from each AI channel, and Search Console has a Generative AI performance report. Both are free.
  • ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, according to OpenAI, so you can find those visits in your analytics.
  • Fix eligibility and missing product fields before you touch wording. Then ask the same questions again a month later.

What an AI visibility checker can tell you

AI visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Gemini name your store or cite your pages when shoppers ask questions. A checker is any tool that tries to measure it. They come in two kinds, and they answer different questions. For the background on how AI answers pick stores, see our guide to how AI search works for online stores.

The first kind asks the assistants for you. Ahrefs' free checker, for example, runs prompts on six AI platforms, then counts how often your brand is mentioned. That tells you whether you come up today. It is a one-time snapshot, and it can't tell you why you don't.

The second kind reads your store. It looks at the data AI channels use and reports what's missing. On Shopify, this is the one that matters. OpenAI says ChatGPT gets Shopify product data through Shopify Catalog, which passes your product data on with no extra work from you. Gaps in that data travel with it.

Neither kind can show you exactly what a shopper sees. Answers depend on each person's past chats and settings. Google is blunt that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. And OpenAI says not every product that matches a question will be shown. Treat any score as a sample.

A question merchants keep asking is simpler than any score. One owner wrote in Shopify's forum in May 2026, "How can we see our visibility from a customer's POV?" That is one merchant's post, and the best answer to it is the manual check below.

Check it yourself in about 30 minutes

You don't need a tool to start. You need ten questions, three assistants and a spreadsheet. Picture a small shop that sells waxed canvas bags.

  1. Write ten questions a shopper would ask

Mix broad and narrow ones. "Best waxed canvas tote bag" is broad. "Waxed canvas tote under $150 that fits a 15-inch laptop" is narrow. Add one that names your brand, and one that names a competitor. Use the words your customers use in emails and reviews, not your own product names.

  2. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

Paste each question into all three. Use a private or logged-out window so your own history doesn't skew the answers. Note which stores and products each one names, and whether any answer links to your site.

  3. Record what each answer says about you

Check the facts when you do come up. Is the price right? Is the material right? A wrong fact usually points to a gap or a conflict in your product data or policies.

  4. Repeat the same questions next month

Answers shift from one run to the next, so one check proves little. The same questions asked monthly show a trend. Change your product data in between, and you can see whether anything moved.

Here is how a log for the bag shop might look. The rows are a made-up example to show the format.

Read the free reports you already have

Your manual log shows what the assistants say. The next three reports show what actually reached your store, and none of them costs anything.

Start in your Shopify admin. Agentic storefronts, the Shopify feature that lists your products in AI chats, have their own page under Sales channels, then Agentic. For each AI channel it shows the sales and orders that channel sent you. It also shows sessions on your store and the conversion rate.

The same page has a search preview that shows how your products might rank for a query, though Shopify calls it a directional guide. Each product also gets a listing quality score. It looks at five things, including how complete the description is and whether the product has verified reviews.

If that page shows an Ineligible warning, fix that before anything else. Shopify lists the reasons it gives, such as a password-protected store, a plan that doesn't include Catalog access, or a store that has opted out. You'll find them on its page about Shopify Catalog requirements.

Next, open Search Console, Google's free tool that shows how your site does in search. AI Overviews are the summaries at the top of some Google results, and AI Mode is Google's chat-style search. Clicks from both count as normal web results in the Performance report. Google also points to a Generative AI performance report there.

Last, check your analytics for ChatGPT visits. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends. In Google Analytics, filter traffic by that source to see how many people arrived from ChatGPT and what they bought.

What our free checker looks at

ShopAEO's own tool is the second kind. You paste your store's address into our free product data checker, and it reads the public data for up to 20 products. That is the same data any visitor can see. It does not log in to your admin, and it does not ask any AI assistant a question.

It follows Shopify's guidance on what AI platforms consider. These are the checks it scores.

  • Barcodes on every variant. If most of your variants have none, as is normal for things you make yourself, this check is marked optional and left out of your score. A store that mostly resells other brands keeps the check scored, since those products usually have barcodes.
  • Whether each product has a product type and a vendor, plus at least one tag.
  • Variant option names, so that options say Size or Color instead of "Title" or "Option1".
  • Description depth. Descriptions should run at least 100 words and include specifics such as materials and sizes.
  • Image alt text that describes the photo instead of repeating the product title.
  • Store policies. It checks that your refund and shipping policies are published, as well as your privacy policy and terms of service.
  • Hidden product data on one product page. That is the code behind the page that labels details for search engines. It looks for the price and stock status. It also looks for the brand and the barcode.

It also tells you whether your robots.txt file blocks AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot. You get a percentage per check and plain lines such as "6 of 20 products missing a barcode". Then it lists the three fixes we would make first.

Know its limits. It can't see your Shopify product category or your Knowledge Base answers. Nothing behind the login is visible to it either. The installed ShopAEO app reads more, as the list of checks on our homepage shows. The checker page also offers a separate emailed report that asks AI assistants your shoppers' questions. During the beta that report runs in batches and takes a few days.

What to fix first

Work from the outside in. A missing field matters less than a store that AI channels can't list at all.

First, make sure your store is eligible. Shopify's Catalog rules say every product needs a title and at least one image. Its price must be above zero, and the store can't be password-protected. Shopify also asks for complete policy pages before you can sell through ChatGPT. Our guide to agentic storefronts and ChatGPT troubleshooting covers each rule and where to check it.

Second, fill in the product fields. Set a product type and vendor on every product. Rename options called "Title" or "Option1" to the choice a shopper makes, such as Size. Add real barcodes where the item has one from its maker, and pick a product category. Our guide to barcodes and product categories in Shopify walks through those steps.

Third, give AI something specific to quote. Add measurements and materials to your descriptions, and say what each item is for. Write "fits a 15-inch laptop" instead of "roomy". Describe each photo in its alt text.

Then wait a few weeks and ask your ten questions again. If you want that tracking done for you, our comparison of AI visibility tools for Shopify lists the paid options and what each one costs.

How ShopAEO helps

The free checker shows the gaps in 20 products. The ShopAEO app closes them across your whole catalog.

  • It reads every product in your Shopify admin, collections included, so it sees what a public check can't.
  • It writes the fixes from this guide, such as a category picked from Shopify's standard list or option names that say Size. You approve each change and can undo it.
  • It saves the barcodes you enter after checking that each one is valid. It never invents one.
  • On the Growth plan it tracks answers weekly in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, so your monthly questions run for you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I track my AI visibility?

Keep a short list of shopper questions and ask a few AI assistants the same ones each month. Note which stores they name. Add the free numbers from Shopify's Agentic page and Search Console's Generative AI performance report, and look for utm_source=chatgpt.com visits in your analytics.

Is a free AI visibility checker accurate?

It is a sample, not a census. AI answers change from one run to the next and depend on the person asking, so a single check can mislead. Treat a free result as a starting point and repeat the same questions over time.

What is an AI visibility audit?

It is a review of how AI assistants describe your store and why. A full audit covers what the assistants say, whether your store is eligible for AI channels, and whether your product data is complete. You can do the first two yourself for free.

Can I see what ChatGPT says to my customers?

Not exactly. Answers depend on the question and on the shopper's past chats and settings. They also vary from run to run. You can ask the same questions yourself, and Shopify's Agentic page shows the sales and sessions that ChatGPT actually sent.

What does the ShopAEO checker look at?

It reads the public data for up to 20 of your products. It scores the product fields in Shopify's guidance on AI platforms. It also checks description depth and image alt text, and whether your policies are published. It does not ask AI assistants anything.
