Key takeaways
- Open Sales channels, then Agentic, before anything else. An Ineligible warning there comes with a reason, and most reasons point to a fix.
- To sell through ChatGPT, Shopify says your store must sell to US customers and have complete policy pages.
- Check settings before wording. An Unlisted status, a missing image or a switched-off channel removes a product.
- If visits stop with no visible cause, bring Shopify Support a timeline with dates and numbers. No public tool shows what ChatGPT holds.
What it is and where your products show up
Shopify agentic storefronts are the Shopify feature that lists your products in AI chats so shoppers can find and buy them there. Shopify's help center names four kinds of channel. They are ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta surfaces such as Muse.
The feature is active by default for eligible stores. Your product data goes out through Shopify Catalog, which is Shopify's structured copy of eligible products from all its stores. Google AI Mode and Gemini are the exception. They get products through the Google & YouTube sales channel or through Google Merchant Center, Google's tool where stores send product data.
Shopify switched this on widely in March 2026. Its news post that month said millions of merchants can sell to ChatGPT users through agentic storefronts. It also launched an Agentic plan for brands that don't use Shopify for their main store.
ChatGPT works a little differently from the others. Shopify describes it as a discovery channel. Shoppers check out on your own online store. It opens inside ChatGPT's own browser or in a new tab, according to Shopify's page on selling on ChatGPT. On the other channels, shoppers can buy without leaving the chat if direct checkout is on.
How to check your status in the admin
Since May 2026, agentic storefronts have their own page in the Shopify admin. Go to Sales channels, then Agentic. You need to be the store owner or have staff permission for it.
The page tells you four things. It shows whether your store is eligible for Shopify Catalog and how many products are in it. It shows which channels are on, since the default setting "Allow Shopify to manage for me" turns them all on.
For each AI channel it shows the sales and orders it sent you. It also shows sessions on your store and the conversion rate. Last, it gives each product a listing quality score, with a section that flags weak spots. Shopify lists all of this on its page about managing agentic storefronts. To compare those numbers with what the assistants actually say, use the manual test in our guide to checking your AI visibility for free.
If something is wrong with eligibility, Shopify shows a reason next to Sources, then Shopify Catalog, on that page. Its page on Catalog requirements lists the reasons. They include a plan without Catalog access, a password-protected store, a store that sells only to business customers, a locked account and an opt-out.
ChatGPT has a few rules of its own. Shopify says your store must sell to customers in the United States, though it can be based anywhere. Your terms of service, privacy policy and refund policy must be filled in under Settings, then Policies. And you must agree to the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
Why products drop out of ChatGPT
Most drop-outs trace back to one of Shopify's eligibility rules. Some apply to the whole store and some to each product.
At the store level, Shopify requires the Starter plan or higher, and the store can't be password-protected. At the product level, each item needs a title, at least one image and a price above zero. It must be published to your online store and can't be unlisted or hidden from search engines. Free products are left out.
Some product categories are left out entirely. Shopify's list includes alcohol, tobacco and vaping, CBD supplements, prescription products, adult products, event tickets and live animals. Shopify classifies products from their own details, so this can differ from the category you picked. It also leaves out products with no category at all, which is one more reason to set one. OpenAI applies its own list of prohibited products on top of that.
Your account history counts as well. Shopify looks for genuine sales and prompt fulfillment. It also wants a low chargeback rate and invoices paid on time. It says "Eligibility is reviewed over time," so a store that qualified in spring can lose it in autumn.
Then there are switches you or a colleague may have flipped. Turning off a channel's Shopify Catalog access removes it, and Shopify says that can take up to 7 days. Setting a product to Unlisted hides it from every AI channel, and from Google too. Products sold only to business buyers are removed automatically when Shopify can tell.
Illustrative example
This is a made-up case to show the pattern, not a store we worked with. A bag shop hides its olive weekender while it waits for new stock, and sets the product to Unlisted so it drops out of its own store search. Weeks later the weekender is back in stock, but it never shows up in ChatGPT. Unlisted also hides a product from every AI channel, so the fix is to set it back to Active.
Finally, eligible doesn't mean shown. OpenAI says not all available products will necessarily be shown. When several stores sell the same item, ChatGPT ranks them on factors such as stock and price. It also weighs whether the store makes the item. That is why your product data still matters once you are eligible.
What merchants report
Shopify's forums show how confusing this has been. These are individual merchants' reports, not Shopify statements, but they line up with the gaps in the documentation.
During the rollout early in 2026, one merchant summed up a chat with support this way: "Support can not determine which phase your shop is in." The same merchant later wrote in another thread that "Shopify did a poor job setting expectations" about how the feature would roll out.
Not every owner wanted in. In March 2026 a merchant wrote, "I don't want to be on the AI shop channels," and asked who to contact about "this decision made on our behalf." Today the Agentic page lets you turn each channel off, as the steps below show.
The hardest case is a store that drops out with no reason given. In August 2026, a merchant in Shopify's developer forum said ChatGPT referral visits "ran 3 to 11 per day through July 24, then dropped to near zero." The store still showed up in Shopify's Catalog search. The merchant asked whether the export had failed validation, and on which fields. The thread has no reply.
Troubleshooting checklist
Work through these in order. Each step rules out a cause that Shopify or OpenAI documents.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Agentic page says Ineligible | Plan, password, business-only store, standing or opt-out | Agentic page, next to Shopify Catalog |
| ChatGPT sends nothing | No US customers, or missing policies | Settings, then Policies |
| One product never appears | No image, zero price, unlisted or restricted | The product in your admin |
| A channel stopped | Catalog access turned off | The channel's settings |
| Shows up but rarely wins | Thin product data | Listing quality score |
| Visits stopped, no cause | Unknown; no public ChatGPT status | Shopify Support |
-
Open the Agentic page and read the warning
Go to Sales channels, then Agentic. If you see Ineligible, click it to read the reason. Most reasons point to a setting or plan you can change. Locked accounts and opt-out cases go to Shopify Support, according to its requirements page.
-
Confirm the channel is still switched on
If "Allow Shopify to manage for me" is off, check the Shopify Catalog access for each channel. Shopify explains the three possible settings on its data sharing page. Remember that a change can take up to 7 days.
-
Check your policies and markets
Fill in the three policy pages under Settings, then Policies. Make sure you sell to customers in the United States if ChatGPT matters to you.
-
Check the missing product itself
Make sure it is active, published to your online store and not unlisted. Give it at least one image and a price above zero. Set a product category too. Avoid hiding it from search engines.
-
Improve what ChatGPT reads
Use the listing quality score to find weak products. Shopify's guide to optimizing products for AI platforms lists the fields to fill in. Our free product data checker shows which of those fields are missing across 20 products. Our guide to adding barcodes and product categories in Shopify covers two fields that take the most explaining.
-
Write down dates and numbers, then contact support
If nothing above explains it, write down when visits dropped. Note what the Agentic page showed at the time. Then contact Shopify Support. A clear timeline is the most useful thing you can bring, since there is no public view of what ChatGPT received.
What Shopify and OpenAI haven't said yet
Three questions have no public answer yet.
Shopify offers no public status that confirms ChatGPT has received a given store's products. Its Agentic page shows Catalog eligibility and the visits ChatGPT sent, not what ChatGPT holds. Neither company has said whether OpenAI checks Shopify's export against its own rules, which is what the merchant above asked.
The two companies also describe checkout differently. OpenAI's help page still says ChatGPT may show Instant Checkout for some eligible products. Shopify's page says ChatGPT shoppers check out on your online store, with no in-chat checkout setting. For a Shopify store, go by Shopify's page. Check both again before you plan around either one.
Ranking is the last open question. OpenAI names a few factors, and Shopify's search preview is a directional guide. Neither says how the listing quality score affects where you appear. For what you can control, see our guide to search and AI answers for online stores and what Shopify says these channels read.
How ShopAEO helps
Most drop-outs are settings, and you fix those in Shopify. What remains is product data, and that is where ShopAEO works. It reads the fields Shopify says AI channels consider and flags missing store policies. Then it writes fixes for thin descriptions, generic option names and missing categories, and you approve each one. Run the free product data checker to see where your products stand.

Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify agentic storefronts free?
Shopify says selling on ChatGPT through agentic storefronts has no fees beyond standard payment processing. Agentic storefronts are on by default for eligible stores on the Starter plan or higher, and no setup is needed for products to be found.
Does Shopify have agentic commerce?
Yes. Shopify's agentic storefronts let shoppers find your products in AI chats. Shopify's help center names ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot among them, along with Google's AI Mode and Gemini. In March 2026 Shopify said millions of merchants could sell to ChatGPT users this way.
How do I turn off agentic storefronts in Shopify?
Go to Sales channels, then Agentic. Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me. Then choose each channel and turn off its Shopify Catalog access. Shopify says removing ChatGPT's access can take up to 7 days, and products can still appear when AI tools find your pages on the open web.
Why did my products disappear from ChatGPT?
Check the Agentic page for an Ineligible warning first. Common causes are a password-protected store or missing policies. A product can also drop out if it is unlisted or has no image. A switched-off channel or a restricted category can do it too. Shopify reviews eligibility over time, so a store can lose it.
Do I need an app or a product feed to sell on ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI says Shopify product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog with no extra work from merchants. OpenAI also lets other merchants apply to send a feed directly, but Shopify stores don't need to.
How long do changes take to show up in ChatGPT?
Shopify says Shopify Catalog updates product data continuously, but it gives no time for ChatGPT to show a change. Turning off ChatGPT's access can take up to 7 days. OpenAI notes that price updates from merchants may be delayed.
