AEO vs GEO vs SEO for online stores: what's different and what to do

Short answer

SEO (search engine optimization) helps your pages rank in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) helps your content become the direct answer to a question. GEO (generative engine optimization) helps your brand get named in AI chat answers. For an online store, all three rest on the same work: pages search engines can find and complete product data.

Key takeaways

  • Google says that optimizing for its AI features is still SEO. You don't need special files or markup.
  • If you sell on Shopify, Shopify Catalog already passes your product data to ChatGPT, according to OpenAI. How complete that data is matters more than any trick.
  • Research on GEO tricks is mixed. One 2023 study found gains of up to 40%, but a 2025 test found most of the same tricks did little.
  • Start with findable pages and full product details. Then answer the questions shoppers ask, and check what changes.

Three names for being found

A shopper can find your store in three different ways. The three acronyms are just names for those ways. To make them concrete, picture a small shop that sells waxed canvas bags.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the work of helping search engines find your pages, understand them and rank them. Say someone types "waxed canvas tote" into Google. SEO is what puts your product page in the list of results they see.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of writing content so a search engine or assistant can quote it as the direct answer to a question. Now the shopper asks, "How do I clean a waxed canvas bag?" Google may show a short answer in a box at the top of the page, called a featured snippet. If that answer comes from your care page, that is AEO at work.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your brand named or cited when an AI tool writes an answer. This time the shopper asks ChatGPT for a waxed canvas tote under $150 that fits a laptop. If ChatGPT names your bag in its reply, that is GEO. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by a team that included Princeton University researchers.

Google now mixes these together. Its AI Overviews are short summaries written by AI at the top of some results. Its AI Mode is a chat-style way to search. Both can quote a page the way AEO aims for. Both also write a full answer, which is what GEO targets.

How AEO and GEO overlap with SEO

The names are newer than the work. Wikipedia's entry on GEO notes that AEO, GEO and "AI SEO" are often used to mean the same thing. Where people do split them, AEO is about the single best answer to a question. GEO is about being one of the brands an AI recommends.

The table shows the difference in goal, where each one shows up and how you would know it is working.

Will AEO or GEO replace SEO?

On Google, no. Google's guide to its AI features says that optimizing for them "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." The AI answers run on the same ranking systems as regular results.

The entry rules are the same too. Google first has to crawl your page, which means its robot visits and reads it. Then the page has to be indexed, which means stored in Google's list of pages it can show. Google's page on AI features says a page must be indexed and able to show with a snippet before an AI answer can link to it. It adds that there are no extra requirements.

What does change is how people click. Ahrefs, an SEO tool company, found that the top result got 58% fewer clicks on average when an AI Overview appeared. That number is its click-through rate, the share of searchers who click. Another tool company, Semrush, found that a visitor from AI search was worth 4.4 times as much as one from regular search, judged by how often they bought.

Both are vendor studies, so treat them as useful signals rather than settled facts. Google itself says clicks from pages with AI Overviews are "higher quality." So SEO is not going away. Fewer people may click, but the ones who do arrive closer to buying.

How AI shopping works for a Shopify store

This is where advice written for bloggers stops fitting. When a shopper asks ChatGPT for a product, the answer is built from product data, not just from articles.

OpenAI's help page on shopping says product results in ChatGPT are not ads. ChatGPT reads metadata, the structured details about a product such as its price and description. It also weighs reviews. When several stores sell the same item, it ranks them on things like stock, price and quality, and on whether the store makes the item.

For Shopify stores, the same page says your product data already reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, which passes your listings on for you. OpenAI says no extra work is needed from you. In March 2026 Shopify said its Agentic Storefronts feature lists your products in ChatGPT by default. It also said thousands of merchants were selling in Microsoft Copilot, and some brands in Google AI Mode and the Gemini app.

That means GEO for a Shopify store is mostly about the quality of data you already send. If a product has a vague title, no product type and variants named "Option1," that is what the AI channel gets. You can see which fields Shopify says these channels consider on our homepage.

Being listed is not the same as being seen, and many owners say they can't tell what is happening. One merchant in Shopify's developer forum wrote that visits from ChatGPT "ran 3 to 11 per day through July 24, then dropped to near zero". The merchant could not find out why. That is one store's report, not a Shopify statement, but the same worry comes up again and again in those forums.

If that happens to your store, our guide covers what to check when your products drop out of ChatGPT.

What the research on GEO tricks shows

Two studies give mixed signals. Both are benchmarks, which means lab tests on a fixed set of questions rather than live store traffic.

The 2023 GEO paper rewrote web pages in different ways and measured how often an AI answer used them. Some rewrites raised visibility by up to 40%. Adding quotes, statistics and links to sources did best. Keyword stuffing, an old SEO shortcut, did no better than leaving the page alone.

A 2025 test called C-SEO Bench tried the same kind of rewrites for questions and product picks. Most of them barely helped, and many made pages rank lower. Ordinary SEO, which moves a page higher in what the AI reads, worked far better. The authors also found that any gain shrinks once many sites copy the same trick.

Read together, the studies point one way. Specific, well-sourced pages help. Rewrite tricks are not a shortcut.

What to do first

Each step below helps with all three at once, so you don't need three plans. Work through them in order.

  1. Make sure Google can find your pages

Google only uses pages in its AI answers that are indexed and able to show a snippet. Search Console is Google's free tool that shows which of your pages are indexed. Check your product and collection pages there first.

  2. Fill in your product data

Shopify's guide to optimizing products for AI platforms lists the fields to complete. They include the title, description, images, product type, vendor, tags, barcode and clear variant option names. It also says to keep your store policies up to date, so AI tools can answer questions about returns.

To see which fields your store is missing, run our free product data checker on up to 20 products. Barcodes and categories take the most explaining, so we wrote a guide on how to add barcodes and product categories in Shopify.

  3. Answer the questions shoppers ask

Put a short, direct answer near the top of the page, then the detail. A sizing question deserves a sizing answer in the first line. Shopify suggests its Knowledge Base app for reviewing the answers AI platforms give about your store and adding your own.

  4. Use facts a shopper can check

Write "fits a 15-inch laptop" instead of "roomy." Real measurements beat vague praise. That matches the GEO paper, where statistics and citations helped. Google says you don't need a special style for AI, so write for shoppers first.

  5. Keep hidden product data in line with the page

Many themes add structured data, which is code behind the page that labels the price, stock and brand for search engines. Google recommends that it matches the visible text. ShopAEO's product data checks look at whether that hidden data includes price, stock, brand and barcode.

From my work

Between June and August 2026, on a Shopify store I managed, we added product structured data and short FAQs to the product pages. In the months after, we saw those products named more often when we asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews about them. Brand mentions grew month over month across all four in our tracking. That is what we observed, not proof that the change alone caused it.

How to tell if it's working

Start with what Google gives you for free. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode count as normal web search traffic in the Performance report in Search Console. Google's guide also points to a Generative AI performance report there for its AI features.

ChatGPT has no report like that for stores. The simplest check is to ask it the questions your shoppers ask, and note which products it names and what it says about them. Do it again after you fix your product data, and compare. Our walkthrough on how to check your store's AI visibility for free turns this into a monthly routine.

Be careful with tools that promise more. Google warns that no outside tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. A tool can show you sample answers, but it can't see Google's scores. If you do want one, we compared the tools that track AI visibility for Shopify stores. Each entry lists its limits and price.

What to skip

Google's guide names several "AEO/GEO hacks" you can ignore. You don't need to break pages into tiny chunks or add AI text files, and chasing fake mentions around the web won't help.

The llms.txt file is the best example. It is a text file some sites add to guide AI tools, and Google Search ignores it. Shopify store owners have also found they can't fully control theirs. In Shopify's developer forum, owners reported in May 2026 that their custom llms.txt files were replaced with a basic default. Your time is better spent on product data and clear answers, which every channel reads.

How ShopAEO helps

Most of the work above comes down to product data, which is what ShopAEO handles. It reads the fields Shopify says AI channels consider and ranks the gaps by search traffic once you connect Search Console. It writes the fixes from your own store data, such as a product category, clearer option names or descriptions with real measurements. You approve each one and can undo it. Start with the free product data checker to see your gaps.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO part of GEO?

People use the names in different ways. Some treat AEO as the part of GEO that deals with short, direct answers. Many use the two words for the same thing. For a store owner the difference matters less than the shared work: clear answers and complete product data.

Will AEO or GEO replace SEO?

Not on Google. Google says its AI features use the same ranking systems as regular search, and that optimizing for them is still SEO. A page has to be in Google's index before an AI answer can link to it.

Do I need an llms.txt file to show up in AI search?

Not for Google. Google says its search ignores llms.txt and similar files. For Shopify stores, OpenAI says product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, so the file is not how your products get there.

Do Shopify stores need to do anything to appear in ChatGPT?

There is no extra setup. OpenAI says no additional work is required from individual Shopify merchants. Shopify adds that accurate, detailed product information can raise the chance that a product is included.

How do I track AEO and GEO results?

In Search Console, the Performance report counts clicks from Google's AI features as regular web search traffic, and Google points to its Generative AI performance report too. For ChatGPT, ask the questions your shoppers ask and note which products come up.

Can anyone promise my products a spot in AI answers?

No. Shopify says each AI platform has its own factors, and OpenAI says not every matching product appears. Good product data improves your chances. It does not decide the outcome.
