AEO and AI visibility tools for Shopify, compared

Short answer

AI visibility tools fall into two groups. Trackers such as Otterly.AI and Ahrefs Brand Radar ask AI assistants your shoppers' questions and report when your brand comes up. Shopify apps such as SearchPie and ShopAEO change the data in your store instead. Many stores need one of each, but the free reports in Shopify come first.

Key takeaways

  • Know which problem you are solving. A tracker shows what AI assistants say about you, and a Shopify app fixes the product data they read.
  • Start with Shopify's Agentic page. It already shows the sales and sessions each AI channel sends you, at no cost.
  • On Shopify, product data is the lever. Shopify Catalog passes that data to ChatGPT, according to OpenAI.
  • Pay for a tracker when you want trends over time or a side-by-side view of competitors, not for a one-off check.
  • Skip any tool that claims to see inside Google or promises your products a spot in ChatGPT.

Trackers and fixers: know which one you need

An AI visibility tool is software that shows how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Gemini mention or cite your brand. Most of them send the assistants a fixed set of questions, called prompts, on a schedule and save the answers. Ahrefs describes Brand Radar this way. It runs search-based prompts through AI platforms and stores the responses.

A tracker measures the result. A fixer changes the cause, and on Shopify the cause is your product data. OpenAI says ChatGPT picks products from structured details that data providers send. For Shopify stores, that data comes through Shopify Catalog, which passes your product data on automatically. A vague title or a missing product type goes straight into that feed, and no tracker will change it.

The list covers both. Items 1 to 7 are trackers. Items 8 to 11 are Shopify apps that change your store data. Many use the label AEO, short for answer engine optimization, which means becoming the answer to a shopper's question. It builds on search engine optimization (SEO). Our guide to the differences between AEO and SEO for online stores explains both.

Most stores end up wanting both answers. One merchant in Shopify's forum asked it outright. "Is my store getting increased conversions as a result of being mentioned in AI to consumers?" A tracker shows the mentions. Shopify's own reports show the sales.

Start here: the free reports you already have

Open your Shopify admin before you pay for anything. Since May 2026, agentic storefronts, the Shopify feature that lists your products in AI chats, have their own page in the admin under Sales channels, then Agentic. For each AI channel it shows the sales and orders that channel sent you. It also shows store sessions and conversion rate. Each product also gets a listing quality score.

Google gives you the other half. Its AI Overviews are the AI summaries at the top of some results, and AI Mode is its chat-style search. Google's guide says you can measure both in the Generative AI performance report in Search Console, its free tool for site owners. The same guide warns that no outside tool has access to Google's internal ranking or AI systems. Treat any vendor that promises Google insight with suspicion.

Our guide to checking your store's AI visibility for free walks through these reports and a manual test you can run in half an hour. The tools below are for when you want more than that.

The tools compared

Prices are in US dollars unless noted, as each vendor lists them. They change often, so confirm on the vendor's page before you buy. Two summary tables follow the list.

  1. Otterly.AI

Otterly.AI tracks how your brand shows up in four AI services by default. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews are among them, and three more are paid add-ons. Plans are sized by prompts, from 15 on Lite to 400 on Premium, according to its help page on plans.

Prices depend on your location, in US dollars or euros, so check its pricing page. The free trial needs no card. Best for a small store that wants simple tracking of a short list of questions.

  2. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

Semrush's toolkit tracks prompts in Google AI Mode and ChatGPT. It also scores your AI visibility against competitors and audits whether AI crawlers can reach your site. It costs $99 a month as its own subscription, with no free trial, and Semrush One plans bundle it, according to the Semrush knowledge base.

Best for a store that already pays for Semrush and wants AI data next to its keyword data.

  3. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Brand Radar measures how often six AI platforms mention or cite your brand, and your share of voice against competitors. Its prompts come from Ahrefs' own keyword database. Ahrefs lists custom prompts, which you write yourself, from $50 a month and its larger AI visibility index from $199 a month.

Ahrefs also has a free one-time checker that needs no sign-up and shows your top five topics and cited pages. Best for checking your brand against competitors at scale.

  4. Profound

Profound tracks brand visibility across up to nine AI engines on its enterprise plan. That plan also lists ChatGPT Shopping tracking. The free trial covers 50 prompts for 7 days in three engines, and enterprise pricing is custom.

Best for a larger brand with a marketing team and a budget for a sales-led contract.

  5. Peec AI

Peec AI tracks your visibility and position in AI answers every day, along with sentiment and share of voice. It also shows which sources those answers cite. Plans run from 50 to 350 prompts with a choice of three AI models. The pricing page doesn't list amounts, so ask its sales team. There is a free trial.

Best for a brand that sells in several countries, since the same page says tracking other countries costs nothing extra.

  6. Goodie

Goodie calls itself an end-to-end answer engine optimization platform. It names seven AI platforms where it monitors mentions and sentiment, according to its about page. It also has tools for AI product discovery.

The pricing page lists Core at $295 a month with a 7-day free trial. Pro is $999 a month. Best for a brand that also sells on marketplaces and wants shopping assistants in the same report.

  7. Scrunch

Scrunch monitors prompts and citations across seven AI platforms. It also tracks visits from AI agents to your site. Starter is $300 month to month, or $250 a month billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial, according to its pricing page.

Best for a team that wants page audits with suggested fixes alongside tracking.

  8. Smart SEO by Sherpas Design

This Shopify app uses AI to write meta tags and alt text for your products. On paid plans it also adds structured data, the code behind the page that labels price and stock for search engines. The paid plans build an llms.txt file too, which is a text file meant to guide AI tools. Plans start free, then Pro is $14.99 a month, according to its App Store listing.

It carries Shopify's Built for Shopify label. Best for a store that wants basic SEO fixes inside Shopify on a small budget.

  9. JSON-LD for SEO by Ilana Davis

Google Merchant Center is Google's tool where stores send product data for Shopping. This app maps the fields Merchant Center asks for into your pages. It adds structured data for products and reviews as well. The listing shows a Pro plan at $399 a year with a 7-day free trial on its App Store page.

Best for a store whose theme's product markup is incomplete or out of date.

  10. SearchPie

SearchPie bundles an SEO audit with speed tools and structured data. It writes alt text and meta tags with AI and generates an llms.txt file. Its Enterprise plan adds an AEO readiness checklist. There is a free plan, then Premium is $39 a month, per its App Store listing.

It carries the Built for Shopify label. Best for a store that wants one app for speed and technical SEO.

  11. ShopAEO

ShopAEO works on the cause rather than the score. It reads the product fields Shopify says AI channels consider, then writes fixes for the gaps, such as a missing product category or an option still called "Option1". When you connect Search Console, it ranks the fixes by the search traffic at stake. You approve each change and can undo it. See how ShopAEO works for the full list.

ShopAEO is in beta. It is a fixer first. Pro adds a monthly sample of AI answers, and Growth tracks answers weekly in four assistants. Free covers an audit and 5 fixes a month, and Pro is $29.99 a month, per our pricing. Best for a Shopify store whose product data has gaps.

Side by side

The first table sums up the trackers, which report on AI answers but don't edit anything in Shopify. The platform column counts the AI services each vendor names on its own site. The second table covers the Shopify apps, which do change your store.

How to choose for your store

Decide what you need to learn first. If you don't yet know whether AI channels send you any sales, Shopify's Agentic page answers that for free. If you want to know which questions name your competitors and not you, a tracker earns its fee.

Then look at your product data. Run the free product data checker on up to 20 products to see which fields are missing. If most gaps are barcodes or categories, our guide to barcodes and product categories on Shopify shows how to fix them by hand. An app is worth it when the catalog is too big to fix one product at a time.

Finally, be wary of any tool that claims to see inside Google or promises a spot in ChatGPT. Google says no outside tool can see its systems. OpenAI says not every matching product appears. If your products vanish from ChatGPT altogether, a tracker won't tell you why. Our agentic storefronts troubleshooting guide covers what to check in Shopify.

Frequently asked questions

How do AI visibility tools work?

Most of them send a fixed set of questions, called prompts, to AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Gemini on a schedule. They save each answer and count how often your brand is named or your pages are cited. Some, like Ahrefs Brand Radar, build prompts from search data. Others ask you to write your own.

What are AI visibility metrics?

Mentions count how often your brand appears in answers. Citations count how often an answer links to your site. Share of voice compares your mentions with your competitors' mentions. Sentiment shows whether the answers describe you well. Shopify's Agentic page adds the sales and sessions each AI channel sent you.

Are there free AI visibility tools?

Yes. Shopify's Agentic page and Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report are free. Ahrefs offers a free one-time checker with no sign-up. Most of the paid trackers in this article offer a free trial.

Do I need a paid tool if I sell on Shopify?

Not at first. Start with Shopify's Agentic page and your own checks in ChatGPT. A paid tracker helps once you want trends over time or a comparison with competitors. It won't fix your product data, which is what ChatGPT reads for Shopify stores.

Can any tool get my products into ChatGPT answers?

No. OpenAI says not all available products will be shown, and Google says no outside tool has access to its ranking or AI systems. A tool can measure results and point to gaps. Complete product data improves your chances but does not decide the outcome.
